LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR BRYANT COMMENTS ON A FAIR AND RESPONSIBLE BUDGET

JACKSON, MISS – Stressing differences of principle on spending and the importance of the Rainy Day Fund to last us for four years, Lt. Governor Phil Bryant today hopes the Legislature will not spend money we do not have but instead will apply a fair and balanced approach to budgeting in these challenging times.

Lt. Governor Bryant stated, “The Senate will continue to stand firm on conservative fiscal responsibility. The Speaker and I have agreed to suspend the legislature until Wednesday, June 3, 2009 at 1:00 PM. By allowing the members to return home, the Senate is saving the taxpayers more than $20,000. The Senate conferees will continue to negotiate in good faith with the House, but keeping the whole membership here is a waste of taxpayer money and accomplishes nothing.”

The Mississippi Senate will reconvene Wednesday, June 3, 2009 at 1:00 PM. According to House Concurrent Resolution 96, the regular session shall end June 3, 2009. The legislature can extend the session with a joint resolution or can adjourn sine die. If the legislature leaves without adopting a budget, the Governor can call a special session.
